How do you respond to unanswered prayers?
This weekend in my morning bible reading, I came across this example of how David responded to an unanswered prayer. I thought it was fitting for Memorial Day.
#VOD: “David prayed to God that the child would get well. He refused to eat anything, and every night he went into his room and spent the night lying on the floor.”
2 Samuel 12:16 GNT
“When David noticed them whispering to each other, he realized that the child had died. So he asked them, “Is the child dead?” “Yes, he is,” they answered. David got up from the floor, took a bath, combed his hair, and changed his clothes. Then he went and worshiped in the house of the Lord. When he returned to the palace, he asked for food and ate it as soon as it was served. “We don’t understand this,” his officials said to him. “While the child was alive, you wept for him and would not eat; but as soon as he died, you got up and ate!” “Yes,” David answered, “I did fast and weep while he was still alive. I thought that the Lord might be merciful to me and not let the child die. But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Could I bring the child back to life? I will some day go to where he is, but he can never come back to me.””
2 Samuel 12:19-23 GNT
David prayed hard and fasted that his child would get well.
Look at how David responded to this unanswered prayer.
He picked himself up, cleaned himself up, and went and worshiped.
David knew he couldn’t bring his son back.
He also knew that worshipping does something for us.
It takes our mind off ourselves and on God.
Please try to remember that when your prayers don’t get answered…
And this weekend, please remember the moms, the wives, the dads, the husbands, the brothers, the sisters, who prayed like David that their boy or girl would return safely from protecting our freedom.
And that prayer didn’t get answered either…
We don’t understand it, but God does.
He understands this, and so did they…
“The greatest love you can have for your friends is to give your life for them.”
